Computer Lab
UCLA Department of Linguistics
|
The Computer Lab at the UCLA Department of Linguistics is located in 3103D
Campbell Hall. It provides computer facilities for use by graduate
students, visiting scholars, and faculty in the UCLA Linguistics Department.
-
There are currently four PC's, a scanner and a laser printer.
-
E-mail accounts are available either through Bruin Online or the UCLA Center
for Digital Humanities. To obtain an email address contact the Linguistics
Department's Front Office Coordinator.
-
Department computer usage is regulated based on the recommendations of the
Computer Committee. Questions regarding the computer room's facilities
should be directed to the Front Office Coordinator.
The Lab also contains two additional PC's which are intended for research
on mathematical and computational approaches to language understanding,
production, and learnability. They are equiped with:
-
A variety of software for the display and manipulation of linguistic structure
on various Windows, Mac, and Unix-like platforms;
-
Theorem proving software for to syntax and semantics (monadic second order
logic, multimodal categorial grammars, etc)
-
Access to corpora, including the Penn Treebank, the ICE-GB British English
corpora, the CHILDES database of child speech, and many others;
-
In association with the UCLA
Cognitive Science Research Progam the lab has access to software for
modeling language evolution and for designing and using simple languages
for robots and other real and simulated artificial life forms.
UCLA has a strong tradition in related formal studies of human language in
Logic,
in Philosophy, and
in Artificial
Intelligence, in addition to research in
Phonetics and
Psycholinguistics in this department, and in the departments of
Psychology, and
Neuroscience.
In addition to faculty and graduate research in mathematical and computational
linguistics, the UCLA Linguistics Department offers an undergraduate major
in
Linguistics and
Computer Science.
